“Let’s start the new year right, twelve o’clock tonight…” Best New Year’s Eve song ever. Just sayin’.
Gosh, it’s been a crazy year. For the world and me personally. Let’s remind ourselves of what happened in 2016. Don’t hate me for it.
- 2016 was the year where everyone died. At least, that’s how it seemed. Prince, Alan Rickman (balled my eyes out in the middle of band when I heard), David Bowie, Carrie Fisher, George Michael, Glenn Frey, Florence Henderson, Gwen Ifil, Leonard Cohen, Gene Wilder, Muhammad Ali, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Elie Wiesel, Debbie Reynolds….it’s a really big list and I’m depressing myself just writing about it.
- 2016 was the year where everyone lost their minds. The election. That’s all I’m going to say.
- 2016 was the year of uncertainty. We all recognized that life is short. I had to face the fact that I don’t have complete control over my own life. My plans went all askew and I had to learn to live with that.
But you know what else 2016 was? It was the year of great experiences. I made some great friends who have proven to be a blessing. The bond I already had with my friends strengthened. They were all there for me when my life went off track and I can never thank them enough for what they did. I went to some incredible concerts. I saw 2Cellos, Mumford and Sons (I was right on the floor for that one), Relient K and Switchfoot (right in front of the stage). My cousin got married and so did one of my best friends. I listened to the Hamilton soundtrack countless times. And most importantly, I realized that this wasn’t the worst year of my life.
So many bad things happened in 2016 that it’s hard to call it anything other than “the worst year ever.” I’m not going to argue that this was the year of Major Global Suck. But if I’m being completely honest, it wasn’t the worst year ever. I spent so much time focusing on the negatives. I had a hard time counting my blessings. And then on Tuesday, one of my favorite YouTubers, Adam Rose put up a vlog entitled ‘2016 WORST YEAR EVER’.
That video flipped my perspective. In short, Adam Rose basically said that 2016 was the best year of his life and it was a choice. We can choose happiness and we can choose to look for the light in the darkness. I had made the choice to let 2016 be the worst year ever. If we all took time to reflect on our year, we all might notice that some pretty great things happened. Does it change the fact that a crap ton of bad things happened this year? No. But it can change our outlook for 2017.
For the new year, let’s keep our minds open and our hearts full of love. Let’s look for the good and spread happiness. Let’s work to end the Major Global Suck. Let’s make the choice to make 2017 the best year ever. Let’s do it.
See you in the new year. End of thought.
